Sebaceous hyperplasia refers to the enlargement of the skin's oil (sebaceous) glands, resulting in small, flesh-coloured or yellowish bumps with a characteristic central depression or pit. They most commonly appear on the forehead and cheeks.
Sebaceous hyperplasia is benign and not contagious. It is often confused with milia or early basal cell carcinoma, which is why a consultation and proper assessment is important before any treatment is undertaken.
Sebaceous hyperplasia develops when the skin's oil glands enlarge and begin to overproduce. It is more common in adults with oilier skin types and increases in prevalence with age. Immunosuppressant medications such as cyclosporin have been associated with significant sebaceous hyperplasia.
