UNDERSTANDING THE CONDITION

What is Body Scarring?

Body scarring covers a wide range of scar types across the back, chest, shoulders, stomach, arms and legs. Back acne scars are among the most common concerns, particularly for clients who experienced severe or cystic breakouts in their teens or twenties.

Body skin is thicker and often more resilient than facial skin, meaning it can tolerate more intensive treatment protocols. However, it can also be more prone to hypertrophic and keloidal scarring in genetically susceptible individuals. A consultation and assessment is always required before treatment.

how do body scars form?

Body scars form through the same mechanisms as facial scars: insufficient collagen production creates atrophic (depressed) scars while excess collagen creates hypertrophic or keloidal scars. Body skin's greater thickness can actually work in favour of scar revision as it tolerates more intensive laser energy.

1

Severe Cystic Acne

Deep inflammatory cystic acne on the back and chest is a primary cause of significant body scarring

2

Genetic Susceptibility

Some individuals have a genetic predisposition to keloid or hypertrophic scar formation in response to any wound

3

Surgical Procedures

Surgical incisions heal with varying degrees of scarring depending on technique, wound care and individual healing

4

Trauma and Injury

Cuts, burns and abrasions that penetrate into the dermis will heal with some degree of permanent scarring
