UNDERSTANDING THE CONDITION

What is Pigmentation?

Pigmentation refers to patches of skin that appear darker or lighter than the surrounding tone. It is caused by an irregular distribution or overproduction of melanin, the natural pigment that gives skin its colour.

Not all pigmentation is the same. Epidermal (surface-level) pigmentation responds differently to treatment than dermal (deep) or mixed pigmentation. Treating the wrong type with the wrong method can worsen the condition, which is why diagnostic scanning at SDL Australia is essential before any treatment begins.

What causes pigmentation?

Pigmentation is caused by an overproduction or irregular distribution of melanin triggered by UV exposure, hormones, inflammation or injury. The depth of pigmentation in the skin determines both its appearance and which treatments will be effective.

1

UV Exposure

Oily skin types produce more sebum, stretching follicle walls and making pores more visible

2

Hormonal Influence

Oestrogen and progesterone fluctuations during pregnancy, pill use and menopause can trigger melasma

3

Post-Inflammatory Response

Inflammation from acne, eczema, injury or treatments can stimulate excess melanin production during healing

4

Genetics

Skin tone, freckle tendency and melasma susceptibility all have significant genetic components

Epidermal pigmentation responds to superficial treatments while dermal pigmentation requires treatments that reach deeper. Mismatching treatment to type can cause paradoxical darkening in some skin tones.
