UNDERSTANDING THE CONDITION

What is Premature Ageing and Sun Damage?

Photoageing refers to the accelerated ageing of skin caused by cumulative ultraviolet (UV) exposure. Unlike the gradual intrinsic ageing process, photoageing can cause significant and visible changes much earlier than expected.

Australia's high UV index makes photoageing one of the most prevalent skin concerns for our clients. Even people who have been careful with sun protection in later life may be dealing with decades of accumulated UV damage from earlier years.

Loss of Skin Firmness
Broken Capillaries from UV Damage
Deep Lines Around Sun-Exposed Areas

how does sun exposure damage the skin?

UV radiation damages DNA in skin cells, degrades collagen and elastin fibres and stimulates excess melanin production. UVA rays penetrate deeply and break down structural proteins over time while UVB causes more immediate surface damage. Years of accumulated exposure results in the complex changes we call photoageing.

1

UVA Penetration

Long-wave UVA radiation penetrates deeply into the dermis, progressively breaking down collagen and elastin

2

UVB Damage

Short-wave UVB causes direct DNA damage in skin cells and stimulates melanin production in response

3

High UV Index

Australia has one of the highest UV indices in the world, increasing cumulative damage faster than most countries

4

Cumulative Exposure

Even moderate, repeated sun exposure over decades produces significant structural and pigmentary changes

It is never too late. Even significant, long-standing photoageing responds well to advanced treatments, though results may require more sessions than early-stage photodamage.
