UNDERSTANDING THE CONDITION

What is Glycation?

Glycation occurs when excess sugar molecules in the bloodstream bind to collagen and elastin fibres through a process that produces Advanced Glycation End-products (AGEs). This causes the normally flexible protein fibres to become stiff, brittle and cross-linked.

The result is a loss of elasticity, increased wrinkle formation and a dull, yellowed skin tone. High-sugar diets, chronic stress, poor sleep and UV exposure all accelerate glycation. It is also a natural part of the ageing process that can be significantly slowed with the right intervention.

what drives glycation in the skin?

Glycation is driven by the interaction between sugar molecules and structural proteins in the skin. It is a natural by-product of metabolism but is dramatically accelerated by dietary sugar, UV exposure, stress, poor sleep and smoking.

1

High-Sugar Diet

Refined carbohydrates and sugar elevate blood glucose levels, increasing the rate of glycation in skin proteins

2

UV Exposure

UV radiation accelerates glycation reactions and generates free radicals that damage collagen simultaneously

3

Chronic Stress

Stress hormones promote inflammatory pathways that interact with and worsen glycation damage over time

4

Poor Sleep

Skin regeneration and repair occur during sleep; chronic deprivation compounds glycation damage significantly

While glycation damage cannot be fully reversed, it can be significantly improved and slowed. Collagen-stimulating treatments rebuild structural integrity while lifestyle changes slow ongoing glycation.
