UNDERSTANDING THE CONDITION

What are Ingrown Hairs and Folliculitis?

An ingrown hair occurs when a hair shaft curls back into the skin after shaving, waxing or threading rather than growing outward through the follicle opening. This triggers an inflammatory reaction, causing red, raised bumps that can become infected.

Folliculitis refers to the broader inflammation or infection of hair follicles caused by bacteria, fungi or friction. Both conditions are particularly common in areas subjected to regular hair removal, including the bikini line, underarms, legs, beard area and back.

what causes ingrown hairs?

Ingrown hairs occur when the hair shaft cannot properly exit through the follicle opening due to the angle of regrowth, dead skin cell build-up or the hair's natural curl pattern. Shaving cuts the hair at a sharp angle that increases the likelihood of re-entry into the skin.

1

Hair Removal Method

Shaving creates sharp-tipped hairs more likely to pierce back into the skin; waxing can also disrupt follicle direction

2

Curly or Coarse Hair

Naturally curly hair is significantly more prone to growing back into the skin after removal

3

Dead Skin Build-Up

Accumulated dead skin cells block the follicle opening, trapping the emerging hair shaft beneath the surface

4

Friction and Pressure

Tight clothing and friction in areas like the bikini line and underarms worsen folliculitis and ingrown formation
