UNDERSTANDING THE CONDITION

About Moles

Moles (melanocytic naevi) are common pigmented growths that develop when melanocytes cluster together. Most moles are completely benign and pose no health risk. However, moles can occasionally develop into melanoma, the most serious form of skin cancer.

Any mole that changes in size, shape or colour, or that begins to itch, bleed or become elevated, must be assessed by a medical professional before any cosmetic intervention. At SDL Australia, we never remove moles without written medical clearance confirming they are benign.

Congenital Moles (Present from Birth)
Acquired Moles (Develop Over Time)
Dysplastic Naevi (Require Medical Assessment)
Compound Naevi
Raised Moles

why does mole assessment matter?

Melanoma, the most serious form of skin cancer, can arise from existing moles or areas that look like moles. Early detection and professional assessment are critical. The ABCDE rule (Asymmetry, Border, Colour, Diameter, Evolution) is used to assess moles for concerning features.

1

Melanoma Risk

Moles can develop into melanoma, making professional assessment essential before any cosmetic removal is considered

2

Sun Exposure

UV damage increases the risk of mole changes and new mole formation over time

3

Fair Skin

People with fair skin, many moles or a family history of melanoma are at significantly higher risk

4

ABCDE Changes

Any mole showing Asymmetry, irregular Border, multiple Colours, large Diameter or Evolution must be medically assessed
