UNDERSTANDING THE CONDITION

What is Seborrhoeic Keratosis?

Seborrhoeic keratoses (SKs) are benign skin growths that appear as waxy, scaly or wart-like lesions in shades of tan, brown or near-black. They are one of the most common benign skin growths in adults over 40 and become increasingly common with age.

They can appear anywhere on the body except the palms and soles, and are especially common on the face, chest, back and shoulders. Despite their sometimes alarming appearance, seborrhoeic keratoses are harmless. Any growth that changes in appearance, bleeds or causes concern should be assessed by a dermatologist or GP.

what causes seborrhoeic keratoses?

The exact cause of seborrhoeic keratoses is not fully understood, but they are strongly associated with ageing and have a clear genetic component. UV exposure may play a role in their development and distribution across the body.

1

Ageing

SKs become significantly more common after the age of 40 and continue to develop throughout later life

2

Genetics

A family history of seborrhoeic keratoses is a strong predictor of their development

3

UV Exposure

Sun-exposed areas are more commonly affected, suggesting UV radiation plays a role in SK development

4

Genetic Mutations

Certain somatic mutations have been identified in SKs, though they do not confer any malignant potential

If you are confident your growth is a seborrhoeic keratosis, you do not need a referral for an initial consultation. SDL will assess the lesion and refer if anything appears atypical before treatment.
