UNDERSTANDING THE CONDITION

What is Reactive and Sensitive Skin?

Sensitive skin is a broad term describing skin that reacts easily to products, environmental factors, temperature changes or touch. It may sting, flush, itch or become red in response to stimuli that would not affect most people.

Reactive skin often involves a compromised skin barrier that allows irritants to penetrate more easily. Dehydrated skin can mimic and worsen sensitivity. When the skin lacks adequate water content, it becomes thin, tight and less able to buffer against external stressors.

Barrier-Compromised Skin

what makes skin reactive?

Reactive skin is most often caused by a compromised outer skin barrier that allows irritants, allergens and environmental triggers to penetrate too easily. This can be caused by over-exfoliation, incorrect product use, underlying conditions such as eczema or rosacea, or chronic dehydration.

1

Compromised Skin Barrier

The protective outer layer of the skin is disrupted, allowing irritants to penetrate and trigger inflammation

2

Over-Exfoliation

Too frequent or aggressive exfoliation strips the barrier and increases reactivity significantly

3

Gut Health

The gut-skin axis is well documented; digestive imbalances often manifest as skin sensitivity and reactivity

4

Underlying Conditions

Eczema, rosacea and atopic dermatitis all cause heightened skin reactivity beyond the usual threshold

Yes. In most cases, reactive skin is driven by a compromised barrier that can be rebuilt. Many clients achieve significantly less reactive skin through a structured SDL Pathway.
