UNDERSTANDING THE CONDITION

What are Age Spots?

Age spots (also called liver spots or solar lentigines) are flat, brown, grey or black patches that develop on areas of skin most exposed to the sun, such as the face, hands, shoulders and decolletage.

They form when UV exposure triggers an overproduction of melanin in concentrated areas. While harmless, they are often one of the first visible signs of photodamage and cumulative ageing.

What causes age spots?

Age spots form when melanocytes are chronically stimulated by UV radiation, causing some to overproduce melanin in clusters rather than evenly. This concentrated pigment becomes visible as a flat, dark patch on the skin's surface.

1

Cumulative UV Exposure

Years of sun exposure progressively damage DNA in melanocytes, causing them to overproduce melanin

2

Fair Skin

Lighter skin types with less baseline melanin protection are more susceptible to developing age spots

3

Hormonal Influence

Hormonal changes can amplify UV-driven pigmentation, making age spots more pronounced over time

4

Age

Melanocyte regulation becomes less precise with age, making irregular pigmentation more common
