UNDERSTANDING THE CONDITION

What are Stretch Marks?

Stretch marks (striae) form when the skin is stretched rapidly beyond its elastic capacity, causing the collagen and elastin fibres in the dermis to tear. They initially appear as red, purple or pink streaks (striae rubrae) and gradually fade to silver-white (striae albae) over time.

Common causes include rapid growth during puberty, pregnancy, rapid weight gain or loss, and intense muscle building. While newer red stretch marks typically respond better to treatment, significant improvement is achievable for both new and old stretch marks with the right protocols.

how do stretch marks form?

When the skin is stretched faster than its collagen and elastin matrix can accommodate, the fibres in the dermis tear. This creates the characteristic streaks we see as stretch marks. The inflammatory response during initial tearing is why new stretch marks appear red or purple, fading to silver as healing progresses.

1

Rapid Skin Stretching

Any rapid increase in body size including pregnancy, growth spurts and weight gain can outpace the skin's elasticity

2

Genetics

Some individuals have naturally less elastic skin and are more prone to stretch mark formation

3

Corticosteroid Use

Prolonged use of topical or systemic corticosteroids reduces skin elasticity and increases stretch mark risk

4

Hormonal Changes

Cortisol during pregnancy and puberty can reduce skin elasticity, making stretch marks more likely to form

Yes. Mature white stretch marks are more challenging than new red ones but still respond to treatment, particularly fractional CO2 laser. Expectations should be calibrated at consultation.
