Cherry spots (cherry angiomas) are small, bright red or purple benign vascular growths formed by an overgrowth of small blood vessels. They are extremely common and become more prevalent with age.
They may be flat or slightly raised, and typically range in size from a pinpoint to a few millimetres. They most commonly appear on the trunk, arms and shoulders but can develop anywhere on the body. Many clients choose to have them removed for cosmetic reasons or because they catch on clothing.
Cherry angiomas form when a cluster of blood vessels near the skin surface proliferates abnormally. The cause is not fully understood but they are strongly associated with ageing. They are not caused by sun exposure or lifestyle factors.
