UNDERSTANDING THE CONDITION

What is Keratosis Pilaris?

Keratosis pilaris (KP) is a common, harmless skin condition in which keratin, a natural protein in the skin, builds up inside hair follicles, causing small rough bumps that resemble permanent goosebumps. It most commonly appears on the upper arms, thighs and buttocks.

It tends to run in families and is often associated with dry skin, eczema and atopic conditions. KP is not contagious and cannot be permanently cured, but it can be significantly improved with consistent treatment and maintenance.

what causes kp?

Keratosis pilaris (KP) is caused by an overproduction of keratin that blocks individual follicle openings. This genetic condition is worsened by dry skin, cold weather and the absence of regular exfoliation. The bumps are keratin plugs, not infected follicles.

1

Genetic Predisposition

KP runs strongly in families and is considered a genetic condition rather than an acquired one

2

Dry Skin

Dry skin worsens KP by reducing the natural shedding of dead skin cells that would otherwise clear follicle openings

3

Atopic Conditions

Eczema, asthma and allergic rhinitis are all associated with a higher prevalence of keratosis pilaris

4

Cold Weather

Low humidity in winter reduces skin moisture and worsens the appearance of KP significantly
