UNDERSTANDING THE CONDITION

What are Skin Tags?

Skin tags (acrochordons) are small, soft, benign growths of skin that hang from the surface by a narrow stalk. They most commonly appear in areas where skin folds or experiences friction, such as the neck, underarms, eyelids, groin and under the breasts.

They are harmless and very common, particularly as we age. They are more prevalent in people with a higher body weight and in those with diabetes or insulin resistance. Any tag that appears irregular, bleeds or changes will be referred for medical assessment before removal.

what causes skin tags?

Skin tags are thought to form from repetitive skin-on-skin or skin-on-clothing friction. They are associated with insulin resistance, higher body weight and hormonal changes. A genetic predisposition also plays a role as they tend to run in families.

1

Friction

Repetitive skin rubbing in body fold areas stimulates the formation of skin tags over time

2

Insulin Resistance

Elevated insulin levels are associated with a higher incidence of skin tag formation in susceptible individuals

3

Hormonal Changes

Pregnancy and hormonal fluctuations can trigger new skin tag development on the body

4

Genetics

Skin tag formation has a familial pattern suggesting a clear genetic predisposition
