Scarring occurs when the skin's natural healing process leaves behind changes in tissue structure or pigmentation. Acne scars can take several forms: atrophic scars (icepick, boxcar and rolling) result from tissue loss, while hypertrophic scars form when the body overproduces collagen during healing.
Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) refers to the flat, discoloured marks left behind after a blemish heals. While not technically scarring, PIH can be just as distressing and is frequently treated alongside structural scar types.
Scars form when collagen production during wound healing is either insufficient (depressed scar) or excessive (raised scar). Deeper or more inflamed lesions carry higher scarring risk. Picking, squeezing or incorrectly treating active acne significantly increases scar formation.
